Orson Hearts Rebecca
Feb. 2nd, 2012 01:44 pmOrson and I were close pals, but the relationship he had with Rebecca was truly something special. She could do no wrong in his eyes, man. The way he would look at her wasn't just the typical cat "hey, when is lunch" look. It was pure adoration, and as long as she was home, he rarely left her side/lap.

Even when they slept, it was with his head resting in her open palm, or with him curled up -- nestled into her side. I move around a lot in my sleep, so I don't get how she can do that, but she remains nearly motionless when sleeping, and that suited Orson just fine.

Goodbye to a beloved friend
Feb. 1st, 2012 10:22 pmIt's with a very heavy heart that I announce the passing of our house-cat of nearly 16 years, Orson, at 5:30 this afternoon -- Feb. 1st, 2012. He went peacefully.

As one can imagine after a good 16 year run, Orson had a lot of friends, and I'm sorry to have to break the news to everyone in this way. I'm a bit of a wreck right now though, and one-on-one human interaction will be tough for the next day or so.
He had a bad last couple of days, which prompted yet another vet visit where X-rays were done, and it was revealed that Orson has been operating for the last 5 or 6 days ("amazingly", as the Vet said) on about 25% lung capacity. His left lung was totally collapsed, and his right one was badly damaged from his asthma. It is a testament to his gentle strength that he hadn't let on how much discomfort he was in, and moreso, that he managed to actually walk around and operate under those conditions. For such an unbelievable sweetheart that honestly never scratched or bit anyone, he was one tough little dude. I guess when your ma and pa were farmcats, you're bred to be strong willed.
God, this is tough to write. It's amazing how much effect a pet has on your heart, isn't it?
Rebecca and I are already missing him terribly, and it's only been a few hours since he passed away. He was a huge part of our lives for so long, (I still remember when I could hold his tiny kitten body in the palm of my hand) it's going to take some adjustment for us. He shared the same birthday as Rebecca.
Here's a picture that is a few years old, back when he was fatter and still had his tummy fur:

Thank you so much, buddy. It was an absolute pleasure to share a home with you.
Goodbye.

UPDATE ON ORSON
Jan. 25th, 2012 06:35 pmAs mentioned my kitty is sick. He's an old cat -- 16 years old on April 10th. (Same birthday as Rebecca!) He had a bad attack of some sort the other day, and we now think it was a stroke. Took him to the vet, and we're now $500 poorer, but the results of the blood tests have come back, and it looks like it wasn't his aesthma, it was his pancreas. His pancreas is in bad shape, and it is fucking with his heart and other organs.
The good news is that the vet tells us that there is some medicine that can help, as well as some pain relievers that will make him a little more comfortable. So it isn't ALL bad news. There is some hope, if this medicine works, and he hasn't been misdiagnosed.
Here he is, poor lil guy.
